The Celebrant

From a Scottish parish
to the Virginia altar.

I spent twenty years as a parish minister in central Scotland — the green country between Glasgow and Edinburgh — before my family and I crossed the Atlantic a decade ago and made Arlington our home.

In twenty-five years of officiating I have stood beside more than two hundred couples on the most quietly important day of their lives. The accent has not changed. The love of the work has not changed. What has changed is the landscape — and Virginia, it turns out, is a beautiful country to marry in.

If you would like a kilt at the altar, a handfasting cord, a quaich shared between you, or a few words of Gaelic blessing, I bring those gladly. If you would prefer none of it, that is welcome too. The ceremony belongs to you; I am simply honoured to write it.

I am authorized by the Circuit Court of the Commonwealth of Virginia to solemnize marriages anywhere within the state.

The Process

Four steps,
from hello to I do.

I

The Conversation

We begin with a complimentary call — an hour, more if you wish — to talk through what you envision and to see whether we are the right fit.

II

The Crafting

Over two further sessions, I write a ceremony around the details of your story. You see drafts, suggest changes, and approve every word.

III

The Rehearsal

The evening before, we walk through the order with your wedding party. Everyone leaves knowing exactly where to stand, what to expect, and how it will feel.

IV

The Day

I arrive early, settle the nerves of anyone who needs settling, and lead the ceremony you chose. Afterwards, your certificate is filed with the Clerk on your behalf.

Fraser listened — really listened — and gave us back a ceremony that sounded like us. Our families are still talking about it. There is no one we would have wanted at the front of that vineyard except him.

We told him we wanted brief, sincere, and a little funny. He delivered all three with grace — and that wonderful accent. The whole thing took fourteen minutes and we have not stopped quoting it since.

Fraser officiated in his kilt, gave us a handfasting we will not forget, and read a Gaelic blessing that made my grandmother cry happy tears. Pictures came back stunning. Worth the booking five times over.

A Practical Guide

Your Virginia marriage license,
without the confusion.

Virginia's process is simpler than most couples expect. Here is everything you need to know — gathered in one place, in plain language.

You can do this in one short visit to any Circuit Court.

Virginia has no residency requirement, no waiting period, and no blood test. A license obtained at any Circuit Court in the Commonwealth is valid for a ceremony anywhere in Virginia.

Both partners must appear together. You will need photo identification, your Social Security numbers (the cards themselves are not required), and the full names of each of your parents — including mothers' maiden names — as they appear on your birth certificates.

The fee is generally $30 — though it varies by county (Fauquier and Henrico both charge $33). Most counties accept cash and credit cards; a few are cash or cashier's check only, so it is worth a quick call ahead.

i

Choose a Circuit Court

Any Circuit Court in Virginia will do — you do not need to apply in the county where your ceremony will be held. Many couples choose whichever is most convenient: the one near home, or the one near the venue.

ii

Apply Together, in Person

Both partners must appear simultaneously at the Clerk's office during business hours. Bring valid photo ID, your Social Security numbers, and a small payment. The clerk will ask you to swear to the information on your application; the license is typically issued the same visit.

iii

Hold the Ceremony Within 60 Days

The license is valid for sixty calendar days from issuance and must be used within the Commonwealth of Virginia. There is no waiting period — you may marry the same day the license is issued, if you wish.

Common Questions

Honest answers, quietly given.

Most couples reach out between four and twelve months ahead, particularly for Saturday weddings in peak season (May, June, September, October). For elopements and weekday ceremonies, I can often accommodate two or three weeks' notice — sometimes less.

I will, with pleasure. Full Highland dress — kilt, sgian-dubh, the lot — is included with the Scottish & Celtic Ceremony, and available on request for any other package at no charge. Couples often find it adds a wonderful note of warmth (and, I am told, makes for striking photographs).

Of course. Handfasting, the quaich, and the oathing stone are old, beautiful rituals — and I have officiated them for couples of every background who simply found the symbolism meaningful. There is no rule that says you must have Scottish blood to share the loving cup.

Whichever you prefer. I have written ceremonies that quote scripture, ceremonies that reference no faith at all, and many in between. I have officiated interfaith weddings, humanist weddings, and traditional Christian weddings. Your beliefs lead — mine simply follow.

Absolutely encouraged. I will give you a gentle structure and a deadline if you want one, and I am happy to read drafts and suggest small refinements. Many couples write their own vows alongside the ceremony I am crafting — the two are designed to complement each other.

Yes. Travel within 60 miles of Richmond is included in the Signature package; further travel and overnight ceremonies are happily quoted. I have officiated in every corner of Virginia — from Tangier Island to the Cumberland Gap.

The ceremony happens anyway, beautifully. I will help you and your venue coordinate a backup plan in our planning conversations, and I will arrive with calm, dry copies of everything we need.

With joy. Virginia law affords every couple the right to marry regardless of sex or gender, and I have been honored to officiate many such ceremonies. You are welcome here.

I complete and return the marriage certificate to the issuing Circuit Court within five days, as Virginia requires. The Clerk's office then mails you a certified copy — typically within two weeks. That copy is what banks, the DMV, and the Social Security office will ask for if you change your name.
